If there was one word that summed up the celebrity style on the BAFTA red carpet on Sunday then it was ‘drama’. As the 69th edition of the British Academy Film Awards opened its doors in London, some of the brightest stars in Hollywood showed off sleek but theatrical sartorial tastes.

Leading the way was Australian actress Cate Blanchett, who stunned in a high-necked Alexander McQueen dress that featured a glittering floral bodice that curved into a slim-fitted fur-textured dark skirt. A Tiffany & Co. cuff and earrings added to the dazzling effect.

Also rocking a textured skirt was UK actress Laura Haddock, whose sophisticated all-black ensemble was livened up by a feathered skirt that stopped at the ankle to reveal a pair of blocky platform sandals.

British talent Kate Winslet also opted for head-to-toe black, but her asymmetrical and geometric hemlines meant that the overall look was sharp and modern.

US actress Julianne Moore took a similarly minimalist approach, sporting a cream halterneck dress with black straps that ran all the way down her back, providing the perfect sartorial lesson in alternative tuxedo dressing.

American starlet Dakota Johnson kept things classic in floor-length red Dior, but her plunging neckline, loosely frilled skirt and lack of jewelry kept things alluringly stark.

Saoirse Ronan kept things wonderfully simple in a strapless floral Burberry dress and gem-hued three-tier Chopard necklace.
