If there’s one thing cricket never runs short of, it’s stories that remind us dreams don’t come with an expiry date. And on Monday in Rawalpindi, Pakistan’s 38-year-old spinner Asif Afridi lived one of those rare fairy-tales.
The left-arm orthodox bowler from Peshawar finally got his long-awaited Test cap as Pakistan took the field against South Africa in the second Test at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
A Debut Nearly Four Decades in the Making
At 38 years and 299 days, Asif Afridi has become Pakistan’s second-oldest Test debutant, only behind Miran Baksh, who made his debut aged 47 back in 1955.
For context, Amir Elahi debuted at 39, but that was for India before he represented Pakistan – so Afridi’s milestone stands tall in green.
It’s not every day you see someone getting a Test call-up when most players are winding down their careers. But Afridi’s story is one of patience, perseverance and an unflinching belief in his craft.
From Domestic Grit to International Glory
Asif’s journey has been anything but linear. He made his first-class debut in 2009, played just three matches that season, and then disappeared from the circuit for several years.
But in 2015, he returned with quiet determination, and slowly, steadily, began to build a reputation as a consistent performer in Pakistan’s domestic scene.
Over the course of 57 first-class matches, Afridi has taken 198 wickets at an impressive average of 25.49. His control and discipline have been his biggest strengths, complemented by an economy rate of 2.92.
With the bat, he’s no mug either, 1,630 runs, including a century, show he can hold his own lower down the order.
It’s the kind of all-round utility that selectors often crave in subcontinent conditions, and it seems Pakistan’s think-tank finally decided to reward his years of hard work.
Pakistan Opt for Spin-Heavy Strategy
Interestingly, Pakistan have gone with just one front-line pacer, Shaheen Shah Afridi, for this Test. It’s a bold move, but perhaps a reflection of the Rawalpindi surface expected to favour spin.
Asif Afridi will partner Noman Ali and Sajid Khan, giving Pakistan a full trio of spinners. The decision also meant Hasan Ali missed out, paving the way for Afridi’s long-awaited debut.
