The World Economic Forum has recently released the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report. This analyses the travel and tourism sectors across the globe and has taken 126 countries into context. The safety of each country is analyzed in the report.

The rankings are decided after measuring the extent to which a country exposes tourists and businesses to security risks that serious harm to people (violence and terrorism). Petty crimes and thefts are not taken into account.


Pakistan has unfortunately made the list as the fourth most dangerous country in the world for tourists. The top most dangerous country is Colombia followed by Yemen, El Salvador and the fifth country is Nigeria.

The Top 10 Most Dangerous Countries From the Report are:

1. Colombia

After the popularity of TV show ‘Narcos’, Medellin shot to fame and became South America’s best destination last year. However, violence and terrorism prevail in the country where armed gangs, are responsible for kidnappings, drug trafficking, and robberies. Acts of terrorism, like explosions, are common in many big cities like Bogota.

2. Yemen

Yemen has the involvement of Rebel groups based in the capital city, Sanaa. Extremist groups of Al-Qai’da are also active. The population lacks basic necessities like food, water and medical assistance.

3. El Salvador

El Salvador is also known for its many gangs, which are known as maras. Gang violence includes everything from extortion to arms and drug trafficking.

4. Pakistan

Although being home to beautiful valleys, mountains, and lakes, Pakistan is a target to several sectarian conflicts and terrorism activities. There are also areas in the country that foreigners are restricted to enter.

5. Nigeria

The violence that extremist groups Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa target are in heavily populated areas like hotels, restaurants, churches. This puts a damper on tourism in the country.

6. Venezuela

A brutal economic crisis has led to a social unrest and an increase in crimes in the country.

7. Egypt

The land of the majestic pyramids has fallen prey to a civil war and ISIS and other extremist groups have been know to target public places.

8. Kenya

The tropical country, home to beautiful white sandy beaches and the great African safari is now affected by grenades, shootings, and stabbings.

9. Honduras

Honduras has the world’s highest murder rates and also has drug trafficking and crime. Police do not have much of a presence as well.

10. Ukraine

The conflict between Ukranian armed forces and Russian- backed separatists have caused thousands of casualties in Ukraine.
