Islamabad: Turkish and Pakistan ministers decided to increase the coordination in the aviation and airline businesses to decrease the influence of gulf airlines in the region with the state-of-the-art air technologies to heat up healthy competition in the market.

A sequel meeting was held between the Minister of State and Chairman Board of Investment Saleem H. Mandviwalla and Mr. Binali Yildirm Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication during the visit of Turkish Prime Minster to Pakistan.

MOS/Chairman BOI apprised the Turkish Minister that BoI is leading a delegation of Pakistani businessmen and will conduct “Road Shows” in various cities of Turkey possibly during Sep-Oct 2012, to attract investment in various sectors particularly its airline.

Turkish Minister briefed the MOS/Chairman BOI that Turkey’s largely free-market economy is increasingly driven by its industry and service sectors, although its traditional agriculture sector still accounts for about 25% of employment.

An aggressive privatization program has reduced state involvement in basic industry, banking, transport, and communication, and an emerging cadre of middle-class entrepreneurs is adding dynamism to the economy and expanding production beyond the traditional textiles and clothing sectors. The automotive, construction, and electronics industries, are rising in importance and have surpassed textiles within Turkey’s export mix.

Global economic conditions and tighter fiscal policy caused GDP to contract in 2009, but Turkey’s well-regulated financial markets and banking system helped the country weather the global financial crisis and GDP rebounded strongly to 8.2% in 2010, as exports returned to normal levels following the recession.

BOI has signed a bilateral investment treaty with Turkey today and BOI has also coordinated the signing of MoU for Solid Waste Management between Govt. of Sindh and Albayrak Group, Turkey.

PTA Accused of Delaying 3G Auction

10 May, 2012
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is delaying the auction for 3G licenses – which is likely to generate up to one billion dollar for the federal government – by not issuing finalized date for auction, Secretary Information Technology Farooq Awan told Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the National Assembly yesterday.

The newly elected chairman of the committee, Nadeem Afzal Gondal, chaired the PAC meeting. The meeting reviewed the audit accounts of telecommunication sector for 2004-05 and 2006-07.

The secretary for information technology alleged that despite giving assurance to Ministry of Information Technology, the PTA did not appoint consultant for the valuation of 3G licenses, which the government had earlier planned to auction in March 2012.

It was revealed that Prime Minister had been told on December 19, 2011 that 3G auction would be held on March 29th, 2012 and that a consultant would be appointed till that time.

“But no consultant has so far been hired by the PTA after expiry of 80 days at a time when the government is desperate for cash,” secretary remarked.

It maybe recalled that mobile operators always wanted to avoid 3G auction. We have covered a timeline for major events in past few months regarding 3G. ProPakistani’s complete coverage for 3G auction can be found here.

Pakistani engineer invents generator that runs on water

14 May, 2012
Swat: After the hectic efforts of 20 years a local engineer in Swat, a scenic valley in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has invented a generator that runs on water instead of other expensive fuel like gas, petrol and diesel.

Rehan Aziz, a mechanical engineer and resident of Mengora, told media on Saturday that if the government provided him funds and a team, he could generate electricity from Swat River that would be sufficient to meet the country’s power needs.

According to local media, the generator separates oxygen and hydrogen from water and converts them into power.

He said that there were several places in Pakistan where electricity could be generated on flowing water, adding that he could also provide the generators to local people if he is patronized by the government.
