EU-funded Training Sessions on Sustainable Production Held

Faculty members from several engineering universities of Punjab participated in a four-day training session, conducted under EU-funded SCI-Pak project and aimed at promoting sustainable and cleaner production in Pakistan.

The EU-funded SCI-Pak project aims at promoting sustainable and cleaner production in Pakistan. Under the project, training was concluded for faculty members of different Pakistani engineering universities. The purpose of the training was to share the concepts and tools of sustainable production, along with case studies from Pakistan, and from across the world, to build on the capacity of the faculty members of Pakistan’s engineering universities so that they can impart such trainings to their students.

The University of the Punjab (Lahore), University of Engineering and Technology (Peshawar), Kinnaird College for Women (Lahore), National Textile University Faisalabad (Faisalabad), and University of Management and Technology (Lahore) participated in the training. The participating universities will now organize similar courses, in form of seminars, at their campuses. The faculty members who attended this training will lead these seminars. The SCI-Pak Project will also arrange field trips and internship opportunities for students who will participate in the seminars.

Earlier, from August 3-6, 2010, a training workshop was conducted by TNO Science and Technology, Eindhoven, Netherlands in Tilburg Netherlands for industrial equipment manufacturers (IEMs) in the textile processing and leather tannery industries of Pakistan.

Training materials, which were developed jointly by the European and local experts, focused on achieving one the main objectives of the project - knowledge transfer and capacity building of IEMs for introducing SP techniques and technologies in the manufacturing sector. The topics included process optimization textile processing, boiler systems, biomass boilers, water treatment systems, condensing economizers, chemical recovery in textile processing and alternate energy systems.

The industrial equipment manufacturers who send their representatives to attend the training session were DDFC Lahore, Aqua Regia Lahore, Haroon Engineering Lahore, Sitara Engineers Faisalabad, Fastech Labs Faisalabad, FBL Group Lahore, Cogen Consult Karachi and Energy and Environment Engineers Lahore.

Etihad A330-200F delivers 59 tonnes of Humanitarian Aid for Flood relief

Etihad Crystal Cargo’s inaugural flight, the new A330-200 freighter, carrying 59 tonnes of humanitarian aid arrived on Saturday, 28 August at the Jinnah International Airport, Karachi.

It was a special charter flight carrying medical and humanitarian supplies, especially for the flood victims in Pakistan, following heavy monsoon rains which hit the country in late July causing severe flooding throughout the provinces...

Additionally, to assist in the relief efforts Etihad Airways carried approx 58.5 tonnes of general cargo to Islamabad on Aug 29th - from Norwegian Church Aid, Norway.

Amer Khan, Etihad Airways’ Country Manager Pakistan, said: “The UAE and Pakistan have a very close bond and Etihad, the UAE’s national airline, is proud to play a part as Pakistan continues to recover from the devastating flooding.”

Shahe Ouzounian, Chapman Freeborn’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “We are very pleased to be the first charter company and customer to utilise Etihad’s new A330-200F.

“Etihad and Chapman-Freeborn worked together with the client to ensure the aid supplies were delivered successfully to Pakistan, on time to the flood affected people.”

Samsung Opens MENA Product Training Centre

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, announced that its award-winning Samsung Gulf Customer Satisfaction unit has opened a state-of-the-art Product Training Centre in Dubai. The Samsung management and employees of Samsung Pakistan will be able to reap great benefits from the inauguration of this elaborate new training facility in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The Product Training Centre, which is located at the Jebel Ali Free Zone, features modern, purpose-built training facilities that cover all products of Samsung Electronics including TV, audio video, mobile phones, home appliances, computers, digital cameras and peripherals.

Samsung Electronics Pakistan General Manager Mr. Steve Han said, “The Product Training Centre will go a long way in ensuring that we continue to excel at customer service in every region where we operate. The facility is being used to train not only Samsung employees and service centre staff but will also enhance the product knowledge and skills of Sales staff and others, thus creating a highly trained workforce that can deliver immaculate services.”

While a fully equipped Theoretical Room will be used for interactive product theory sessions and soft skills training, the facility’s Practical Rooms contain advanced technical equipment and a range of Samsung products allowing participants to get hands-on experience. The Product Training Centre also features Field-Test Rooms designed to test new products and an E-Studio equipped with Samsung’s Electronic Instructional Audio and Video training materials.

Samsung Gulf Customer Satisfaction is aimed enhancing customer service levels in the region. It has launched a number of industry-leading initiatives such as the Samsung Service programme, which was launched in 2009 and enabled customers to repair their “In and Out-of-Warranty” Samsung products for free. Samsung Gulf Customer Satisfaction also established the “Customer Interaction Centre,” a call centre where consumers in the UAE can call the toll free 800-SAMSUNG number to obtain product information and seek after-sales support. Furthermore, the service center tracks every service status from the repair registration up to service completion in real-time to avoid any delay and exceed customer satisfaction. The unit received the 2010 Customer Care Competitiveness Award from the Middle East Excellence Award Institute (MEEAI), earlier this year.

National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) opts for SAP Technology Implementation

NTC and Siemens Pakistan have entered into a technology agreement according to which SAP would be licensing its ERP software solution at NTC. The solution will be implemented at NTC through Siemens Pakistan, which is one of SAP’s top implementation partners in Pakistan.

The Chief Guest at the ceremony was Mr. Nagueeb ullah Malik, Secretary IT and Telecom. He appreciated NTC’s initiative to implement global best practices in the business processes of the organization that will enable NTC to standardize its core processes, and help the organization in taking well informed decisions.

Speaking on the occasion Brig. (Retd.) Mirza Babar Aziz Beg, Chairman NTC, said: “We are delighted to have signed such a strategic agreement with SAP. Mobilink reaches out to 65,000 flood affectees

Mobilink, Pakistan’s market leader in cellular services and a part of Orascom Telecom Holding, is rapidly expanding the outreach of its flood relief efforts and continues to deliver healthy food and basic necessities to flood victims across the country.

The efforts are being channeled through the Mobilink Foundation using the Rs 85 million pledged Mobilink and OTH exclusively for Flood Relief efforts. In addition to this, Mobilink employees have generously contributed more than Rs. 6 million from their salaries and generated funds with the help of family and friends through collection points set up in 22 Mobilink offices across Pakistan. The procurement, packing items into family units, loading and distribution is being managed end to end by Mobilink employees who have donated their personal time to relief efforts.

Mobilink Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Mobilink, has mobilized its team of volunteers who have distributed over 44,000 bottles of clean drinking water, 1,860 packs of dry food rations 3,900 hygiene kits, 500 bags of atta, and 7,215 ready to eat food packs amongst the affectees. Through its efforts, Mobilink has touched more than 15 locations including the suroundings of Multan, Muzaffargarh, Nowshera, Tarru Jabba, Thetar Khel, Dera Ghazi Khan, Charsadda, Agha Khel, Khwazakhela & Madyan, Swat, Sukkur, D.I. Khan as well as smaller towns and villages across Pakistan.

In addition to this support, Orascom Telecom has also launched special international campaigns in Greece and Egypt to raise awareness and funds for flood-relief activities in Pakistan.

In the past Mobilink has carried out extensive relief efforts for the 2005 earthquake victims and a large relief camp for accommodating 1,000 families of IDPs from Swat.
