Apple is most likely to replace the usual LCD screens of iPhones to the improved technology of OLED displays in 2018 as reported by Japanese website Nikkei.

Earlier rumors surfaced that iPhone 7 might feature OLED Display but it is not possible now and iPhone 8 and iPhone 8s expected to be the first iPhone models to have OLED screens.


According to the reports, Apple is not in a position to move to OLED displays for iPhones in near future (2016-2017) because the company has invested $4 billion into a new LCD display plant, so this changeover is viable in 2018.

Apple has informed its suppliers about moving to OLED displays in 2018 and currently the company is weighing the utilization of OLED displays from all angles. Secondly, the iOS interface will also require a change from white to black based design like that of Apple watch in order to be benefitted by energy efficiency of OLED screens.

Even in 2018 there will be both LCD and OLED display iPhones are expected due to some production constraints and high demand of iPhone. Apple has been said to be in contact with Samsung and LG to become the primary suppliers of OLED panels for iPhones.

OLED displays have a huge demand in because these specially designed energy efficient screens give a greater black contrast and consume less power comparatively to others.
