For the 2016 edition of the Sony World Photography Awards, three extremely talented Pakistani photographers have been shortlisted for a chance to win. The lucky individuals are Zohaib Tariq, Kumail Rizvi, and Shahzad Khan, who have been given the recognition they deserve through the awards’ photography competition for photographers who are 19-years-old or younger.
The 2016 competition saw its highest number of participants yet, with 230,103 from 186 countries around the world having been submitted to them. This was a record-breaking number of entries for them, and even the entries from Pakistan saw a 137% increase, an astonishing fact that was mentioned in a statement released by the awards committee.
All three short-listed participants from Pakistan were nominated for an award in different photography categories. Zohaib Tariq hails from Islamabad and is currently enrolled at HITEC University Taxila. His image titled “Pakistan” was nominated in the youth culture category, and it depicted local farmers at work in the fields.
Shahzad Khan was short-listed for his photograph titled “Awal Gul” in the youth portraits category, a striking photo taken in the a slum on the edges of the city of Islamabad, featuring a close-up shot of a child.

Kumail Rizvi was short-listed for the youth environment category, for his photo showing a bird’s eye view of a car park in Malaysia. With this impressive image, Rizvi was aiming to depict a human-made environment.

A gala ceremony will be held in London, where the complete list of winners of the awards will be announced. The winning photographers will be greatly rewarded, as they will have a chance to win a part of a $30,000 prize. The winners will also have the pleasure of having their photos showcased at the World Photography Awards exhibition from April to May, as well as being featured in the Sony World Photography Awards book of 2016.
